Issues of Foreign Workers Policy in Malaysia Manufacturing Industry

Presentation On March 7, 2011 The Star, we realize that our Malaysia government had chosen to enroll progressively remote laborers from India which around 45,000 individuals from India. This is to satisfy the need by around 13 segments which presently in deficiency of workforce. Along these lines, this brought about numerous individuals and The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) had firmly contradicted the choices made by government. The Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) is said as the most agent workers’ association in Malaysia.Three primary goals stressed by MTUC: first is to advance the enthusiasm of its subsidiary associations so as to improve the workers’ financial and social conditions. Second is to guarantee the arrangements are created and move been made towards ensure that full business and setting a lowest pay permitted by law, a legitimate greatest working period every week which is 44 hours and filled in as an instructional hubs for laborers. Thirdly , construct a Social Security gauges that give retirements benefits, just as assurance against affliction, joblessness, injury, and old age.Overall, MTUC was served to ensuring the laborers intrigue or battle for them. As per Nagiah Ramasamy (2008), our Malaysia worker's guild development is confronting numerous difficulties, which are from neoliberal strategies and the changing structures of business. Because of the exacting necessities of the Trade Union Act 1959, Malaysia association are ordinarily little divided and local. Be that as it may, they despite everything fight the choice of enlisting increasingly remote laborers from India which may hurt our neighborhood laborers benefit. Some nearby specialists are excessively fussy on work determination and they don’t need to work except if there is significant compensation, advantage or reward sitting tight for them. Along these lines, mentality towards the activity is their fundamental issue. In this way, the businesses comp elled to saved the nearby laborers and enlisting the remote specialists by re-appropriating or others way. The destinations of this task are to make sense of the issues looking by Trade Unions in Malaysia on vagrant and residential laborers. Besides, we likewise realize that the effects of the remote laborers strategy in assembling industry. In this task, we have an all the more understanding on outside specialists strategy just as the approaches to beat it in future pattern. Writing Review According to A. Navamukundan (n. d. ), businesses are cost-cognizant and pick laborers who are reasonable as well as have the vital abilities and conform to exacting order and difficult work. The inclination will be for migrant outside specialists, who will acknowledge both lower wages and more terrible terms and states of business, as their essential target is to acquire however much cash as could be expected inside a limited ability to focus time. Those are the motivation behind why the number of inhabitants in foreigner remote laborers are expanding a very long time by years. An investigation done by Philip S. Robertson Jr (n. d) expressed that the Malaysian Government doesn't have a complete legitimate and strategy structure to manage the enrollment, confirmation, situation, treatment, and repatriation of transient specialists. Oversight of transient specialists is isolated among services, and even inside services, between different divisions. Thusly, outside specialist can without much of a stretch move to our nation to get a new line of work which offers them the compensation that is higher than their own countries. This has become a danger to the nearby laborers. Nagiah Ramasamy (n. d) recommended that the test for association pioneers is to assemble an association development that can react adequately to the dangers and openings that it faces with the developing impact of MNCs and the developing quantities of two-sided exchange understandings. Worker's guilds can help in improving word related wellbeing and security, not too bad work and social exchange with government and managers. It is evident to such an extent that worker's guild assume a significant job in battling for nearby worker’s right. An investigation introduced by U. S.Department of Labor expressed the Government of Malaysia reconsidered its approach on outside specialists so need would be given to Malaysians looking for work because of the world monetary log jam and expanded joblessness in 2001. The Government has constrained reported laborers to a multi year remain and is taking action against unregistered outside specialists, with new alterations to the Immigration Act calling for cruel punishments. As per Kgaogelo Elizabeth Mokoka (2007), most South African attendants move to goals, for example, UK, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Australia and the USA (Xaba & Phillips 2001).In an examination authorized by the World Health Organization (WHO), Buchan et al (2003) recogni zed two gatherings of nations as far as medical attendant migration and portability. â€Å"Destination countries† are those to which medical caretaker are drawn, while â€Å"source countries† are those that attendant are drawn from. Goal nations incorporate five nations, in particular Australia, Ireland, Norway, the UK and the USA. As per Mr. Ajit Singh Jessy from the Penang Human Resources advisory group, pay stays as one of, or the most, significant factor in the maintenance of workers. As such, the protests of nearby specialists with respect to wage levels are not ridiculous, particularly with regards to modest types of work. What might be outlandish is the contention that local people avoid these employments which at that point must be cultivated out to outside workers. As per Cecilia Kok (2011), for South and Southeast Asian economies, particularly those that are falling behind Malaysia, numerous vagrant specialists see a land streaming with milk and nectar. Offici al information show that Malaysia pulls in a colossal number of vagrant laborers into the country.According to authentic record, the number quadrupled from under 500,000 of every 1999 to in excess of 2,000,000, speaking to about 17% of the nation's workforce in 2008. Vijayakumari Kanapathy (2006) recommended that remote laborers in huge numbers were viewed as a security danger as the increasing crime percentage and rate of exceptionally infectious maladies were related with them. Such mainstream observation was intensified by the conviction among strategy creators that substantial dependence on low-gifted remote work will trap the economy in low-wage low-aptitude harmony and hinder the much-justified financial change into high-talented activities.According to the International Organization for Migration (n. d. ), there are roughly 2,109,954 transient specialists at present working in Malaysia, 50 percent are Indonesian work vagrants, showing the size of Indonesian work movement to M alaysia. Most of work transients showing up in Malaysia begin from other South and Southeast Asian nations, for the most part pulled in by the more significant compensations that are canvassed in Malaysia contrasted and their nations of origin.A study done by FEDERATION OF MALAYSIAN MANUFACTURERS (2010) expressed that Manufacturing organizations are as of now announcing an expansion in orders. In any case, many are confronting troubles tolerating and satisfying requests because of a lack of laborers. Some need to dismiss orders while others are punished for late conveyance. There are likewise organizations recording misfortunes since they have not had the option to satisfy orders. Advancement of the Issues Important of Manufacturing Industry and Contribution to GDP The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Malaysia is relies upon its farming ector, fabricating businesses and the administration areas. Buying power equality (PPP) is a hypothesis which expresses that trade rates between mone tary standards are in harmony when their buying power is the equivalent in every one of the two nations. This implies the conversion standard between two nations should rise to the proportion of the two nations' value level of a fixed container of merchandise and ventures. In 2008, the farming division had contributed 9. 7 % towards the country’s GDP. The commitments of the assembling businesses were assessed as 44. % and that of administration area was 45. 7 % towards the country’s GDP. According to the GDP-PPP, Malaysia is positioned 29th on the planet. A GDP development pace of 20 % was seen towards the finish of twentieth century. The Gross Domestic Product ostensible of Malaysia in 2009 was evaluated as US$ 207,400 billion of every 2009 and that of GDP-PPP was assessed as $ 3. 9 billion. The GDP ostensible per capita in 2009 was assessed at US $8,100. Examination of difficulties looking by Trade Union in Malaysia Number of outside specialists is growing-1. 6 milli on of every 2005 to 1. million of every 2010 (figure 1). As indicated by Philip S. Robertson Jr. , Malaysians have a terrible height of not ready to perform employments that they consider as 3-D (messy, troublesome and risky), making interest for remote specialists in segments like ranches/horticulture, development, assembling, and some assistance occupations. The Malaysian Trades Union Congress said today it contradicts unequivocally the proposed mass enrollment of 45,000 outside specialists since it would push out local people from the work showcase. As per MTUC VP A.Balasubramaniam, a significant impact on the wages of Malaysians could be brought about by such a major deluge of outsiders and the government’s high-salary strategy for them would be endangered as well. Besides, local people are being denied or separated on the off chance that they are contending with remote laborer for the chance of being picked to stay at work past 40 hours as indicated by Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia. An examination done by Syarisa Yanti Abubakar, from the momentary perspective of bosses, transient work might be employed just if doing so is more savvy contrasted with other existing alternatives. That’s why local people are deserted in light of the fact that their expense of recruiting is far higher than that of outside specialist. Other than that, as indicated by Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia, an ever increasing number of neighborhood laborers are conserved and supplanted with remote specialists. This is come about by the activities taken by many assembling organizations of re-appropriating remote laborers through certain offices. Besides, height is another explanation which cause the conservation of neighborhood laborers, for example, thinking too exceptionally o

Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 564 Downloads: 3 Date added: 2019/10/10 Did you like this example? Behavioral theory approach is based on the fact that behavior is learned from the past experiences. It also states that the same way a behavior can be learned it can also be unlearnt or reconditioned. This is a theory based on the fact that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Behavioral Theory: Sensation, Perception, Consciousness, Motivation, Emotion, and Learning" essay for you Create order There are two superior types of conditioning which are classical and operant conditioning. Operant conditioning can be defined as an act of trying to modify behavior using either positive or negative reinforces (Atkinson, 1996).Classical conditioning entails associating two different stimuli with a response that has been learnt. Behavioral theory is applicable in our day to day life be it in our personal, professional, social life and community activities(Cherty, 1963). In the behavioral theory teachers use operant conditioning. This is where they reward students when they are correct and motivating them when they are wrong. Studentsare always motivated when they are rewarded for performing well. In this case, students tend to pass and will strive to do even better since they learned once they perform well they are rewarded. This is positive reinforcement (Fowles, 1987). Teachers tend to use negative reinforcement for example punishments, whipping students and suspensions to discourage indiscipline in classroom setups. In this case, students will avoid being indiscipline or breaking school rules, since they know once they break school rules they will be punished. With this, a school can maintain their students(Fowles, 1987). In our communities, classical conditioning has been used as a very successful way to modify undesirable behaviors, for example, substance abuse drinking and smoking(Rescorla, 1988). In this case, counselors or the society as a whole try to make the victims associate the undesirable behavior with unpleasant effects like causing accidents when you drive while you are drunk or even get diseases due to abuse of drugs. Classical condition is involved in the elimination and formation of ouremotion responses. A person elicits responses as a result of the stimuli in the environment around you. Classical conditioning helps us understand the many emotions we express (Rescorla, 1988). Classical conditioning can be used to reduce fear in people. This can be done by counterconditioning(Rescorla, 1988). In this case, you pair the stimuli that cause fear with stimuli that give positive emotions, for example, a person who is afraid of dogs and loves vanilla ice cream is shown the dog then given the ice cream he or she will associate the dog with a good feeling and hence reduce their fear of dogs. Parents can use operant conditioning in training their children on the basic skill they need to know for example washing hands, toilet training, teeth brushing and sharing. In this case, you will have to reward the child once you notice them doing the correct thing (Atkinson, 1996). The reward must be immediately, and the parent must be consistent in rewarding till they see the child has fully learned the desired behavior(Atkinson, 1996). In workplaces, the managers or bosses can use positive reinforcement in boosting the performance of workers. The manager could award the best employee or even promise salary increment on workers who reach targets in case of sales. This will motivate employees to even work harder(Cyert, 1963). In conclusion, the behavioral theory plays a significant role in the elimination and formation of a person behavior. Any behavior learned can also be unlearnt and even modified through the classical and operant conditioning.

Art Of Persuasion Essays - Rhetoric, Logos, Pathos, Persuasion

Art Of Persuasion The art of persuasion was one of the greatest assets possessed by the patriarchs of The United States. It allowed our founding fathers to preserve the fragile Nation through the decade of Revolution and left for its posterity the legacy of the most celebrated works of American history. Patrick Henry, in his address to the Virginia Convention, institutes effective use of the entire range of appeals, logos, ethos, and pathos giving the speech a quality of concrete infirmity which leaves the listener with no doubts; Virginia should join the Revolution of Independence. The logos faction of Henry's address utilizes firm facts to convince the listener that fighting or slavery are the only possible outcomes of their meeting. These appeals are used predominantly in the third and fourth paragraphs and mingle historical suggestions with rhetorical questions. Are fleets and armies necessary to work a love and reconciliation? asks Henry of his audience. The form that the suggestion takes on, a question, serves not only to state the obvious contradiction that the fleets and armies are not on American soil to promote peace, but to give the actions of the Convention a positive visage; to help the members feel justified in their actions. The later purpose is achieved in the second part of the question, love and reconciliation. This suggests that while America is working for love and reconciliation, England is transporting fleets and armies. Henry's logos appeals are again evident in his description of the actions America has already taken for peace: We have re monstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves.... The purpose of the listing style of this section is to inundate the listener with many facts at once, each of which require personal thought, in order to stress the many tries at peace America has attempted. Additionally, all of the verbs in the passage are in past tense and there are only short sentences. This emphasizes that action must be taken. Quickly. Whereas the logical side to Henry's argument acts as a moderator to his argument, Henry's ethos and pathos appeals create an emotional uprising in the attendee, one of the main fuels for the Revolution. Well known allusions to popular mythology and the Bible instill a sense of self confidence through the righteous connotation of the two works. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of [the] siren, warns Henry regarding the reconciliatory attitude many patriots had recently adopted. The well known fate of those who regard the Sirens, drowning, is sure to convey the purport of his argument; action must be taken. A more personal artifact, the Bible, cautions that those who [have] eyes, [do] not see, and [those with] ears, [do] not hear, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation. This well known passage from Ezekiel tells the people of America to value the rights that they hold dearly and fight the Revolution. The Bible provides an a rgument the people can not reject. Adding to allusions, references to contemporary material Henry knows holds a tender place in the minds of his audience further enflames their emotion and patriotism. The mention of ,the insidious smile with which our petition has been lately received, reminds one of one of the times a plea has been ignored by the British and suggests that further complaints of a similar nature would be futile. Later, the reference to a British guard... stationed in every house, warns that the famed Quartering act may soon effect everyone, something that the Americans would detest. Emotional and patriotic appeals, rather than logical ones, were the most effective in prompting the American people to Revolution. Even in the early ages of American history, strong skills of persuasion were required to sway its population. Patrick Henry, one of the greatest among these artists, exhibits many effective tools. His balance of emotional and logical appeals, his personal but concrete references to current events, and pertinent allusions to trusted documents all culminate in the production of a work of oratory genius epitomized in his closing cry: I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death! Zeitgeist John Philip Sousa essays

Zeitgeist John Philip Sousa essays Artists do not create in a vacuum. They reflect their times or at the very least are affected by the lives they lead which are also influenced by the public sphere. The term for this reflection is Zeitgeist. It literally means spirit of the times. John Philip Sousa and his works can be classified under this term of Zeitgeist. Most of Sousas music was composed during a period known as the gilded age. This period is known for its gross materialism and blatant political corruption in the United States. However, Sousas music does not seem to reflect this corruption, but rather it reflects a way to deal with the corruption and mishaps of the times. John Philip Sousa, also known as the March King, was born on November 6,1854, in Washington D.C., near the marine barracks where his father, Antonio, was a musician in the marine band . He received his grammar school education in Washington and for several of his school years enrolled in a private conservatory of music operated by John Esputa, Jr. . There he studied piano and most of the orchestral instruments, but his main passion was the violin. He became very good at the violin, and at age 13 he was almost persuaded to join a circus band . As a young boy, the martial music of army bands in the streets of Washington during and immediately following the Civil War had a profound effect on him. When he was not yet fourteen he enlisted in the Marine Corps and succeeded in becoming a member of the marine band . This is where he picked up a liking for marches. After being discharged from the Marine Corps, Sousa toured with several traveling theater orchestras and in 1876 moved to Philadelphia. There he worked as an arranger, composer, and proofreader for publishing houses . While on tour with an opera company in St. Louis, he received a telegram offering him le ...

How would you stop bullying in schools Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

How would you stop bullying in schools - Essay Example The former victim gains self-esteem and a stronger character, while the vanquished bully is served a bitter lesson that will surely cause them to contemplate their life choices and gain a desire to reform. Unfortunately, nothing about bullying or being a victim of bullying in real life is this simple. Bullying is a result of complex social interactions that involve many aspects of personal and communal relationships. An understanding of the bully-victim relationship, the motivations of both bully and victim and how society handles this dynamic is essential if bullying is to be prevented. The best bullying prevention plans include elements that address the concerns and motivation of victims and bullies. These plans also include elements designed to train teachers, supervisors, coaches and parents in real techniques that allow them to support victims and reach out to bullies. Finally, these programs will work with resources within the community such as Student Resource Officers (SROs) and other law enforcement entities to educate the entire community about the changing face of bullying from a legal aspect. This is especially helpful with the rise in new forms of bullying such as Cyber-bullying and sexual harassment. The only way to prevent bullying is to take a holistic approach to the phenomenon Traditionally, bullying prevention programs have focused on the bully. The thought was that if the bully could be contained, then the other potential victims could be protected from socially or physically aggressive individuals. Recent studies suggest that counseling or punishing bullies is only one part of the prevention program. Bullying, researchers have found, involves three distinct groups of individuals; the bullies, the victims and the bystanders (Breaking†¦, 2010). Addressing the role of each is essential to forming a holistic approach to bullying prevention programs. Starting with the victims, not

Gantt chart Essay Example for Free

Gantt chart Essay The phenomena of calendar effects in stock markets seem to be a center of curiosity for many researchers across the world. Following many studies about the significance of calendar anomalies, testing the presence of Monday effect and January effect appears to be an area of interest. The aim of this study is to discuss about calendar anomalies and its significance. It should be noted that the study will focus mainly on Monday effect and January effect on the stock returns of companies listed on SEM-7. The research proposal will consist mainly of the literature review part and the methodology part. 2.LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1DEFINITON OF BASIC CONCEPTS Calendar anomalies are effects which include apparently different behavior of stock markets on different days of the week, month and year. Calendar effect may also be defined as a collection of theories that state that certain days or month are subject to above price changes in stock market and can therefore represent good or bad times to invest. Brooks and Persand (2001) defined calendar effects as the tendency of stock returns â€Å"to display systematic patterns at certain times of the day, week, month or year †. As mentioned above, the study will discuss mainly on Monday effect and January effect. The day of the week effect also called Monday effect indicates that the average daily return of the market is not the same for all days of the week as we would expect on basis of Efficient Market theory. Monday effect is a theory which states that return of the last trading day is the highest and return on the first trading day is the lowest across the days of the week. January effect is a phenomenon whereby stocks claim higher rates of returns during January compared to any other month. Smaller stocks tend to beat bigger stocks during this period. The January effect also known as â€Å"year-end effect† indicates rise in price during the period starting on the last day of December and ending on the fifth trading day of January . The Stock Exchange of Mauritius was incorporated in Mauritius on March 30, 1989 as a private limited company responsible for the operation and promotion of an efficient and regulated securities market in Mauritius. The SEM operates two markets namely the official market and the Development Enterprise Market (DEM). The study will focus only on the official market. On 31 March 1998, the Stock Exchange of Mauritius launched the index SEM-7, comprising companies listed on its official market. The SEM-7 comprises the seven largest qualified companies of the official market measured in terms of market capitalization, liquidity and investibility criteria. Therefore, the study will be based on the 7 companies in the SEM-7. 2.2Theoretical Explanation on Calendar effects EFFICIENT MARKET THEORY The growing number of studies proving the significance of calendar anomalies has led to doubts on â€Å"Efficient Market Hypothesis†. According to Fama (1970), â€Å"a capital market is efficient if all the information set is fully reflected in securities prices†. Efficient market hypothesis is one of the theories which states that, in whichever form, all the information is completely integrated in the share prices and therefore no one can beat the market. There are three form of market efficiency; weak form, semi-strong form and strong form based on set of information. The weak form efficiency states that no one can outperform the market based on past information while in the semi-strong form, despite using public information, the market cannot be beaten. The strong form efficiency states that no one can beat the market despite using past, public and private information. As a result, according to the efficient market theory, the calendar anomalies have no effect on the share prices and that no one can use this anomaly to gain abnormal returns. MONDAY EFFECT As already mentioned above, Monday effect, also known as weekend effect, is a theory according to which returns on Monday is less than the other trading days. Two hypotheses that have been formulated to explain Monday effect are Calendar Time Hypothesis and Trading Time Hypothesis. According to the Calendar Time Hypothesis, Monday’s average return will be different from the other days’ average returns. A reason for this difference is that Monday’s average return will be three times higher than the average returns of the other working days. According to Trading Time Hypothesis, the returns on stock are generated during a transaction. This indicates that average returns will be the same for all weekdays including Monday. JANUARY EFFECT January effect occurs when there is a general rise in stock prices during the month of January. January effect is also known as small firm in January effect because it is most frequently observed in small cap stocks . The nature of this anomaly suggests that the market is not efficient as market efficiency would suggest that this effect would disappear. The theories which explain January effect are: †¢Tax-Loss Selling Hypothesis This hypothesis was first suggested by Branch (1997) . In order to reduce tax liabilities, investors sell their loser stocks in December and create capital losses which they offset with the capital gain. Due to excessive selling of shares in December, stock prices are decreased and then investors purchase it again in early January which forces stock prices to rise. However, it is noteworthy of the fact that since in Mauritius, capital gains is not liable for tax purposes, this hypothesis cannot be used to explain January effect. †¢Window-dressing Hypothesis Some portfolio managers also do window dressing to their portfolio by creating January effect. Since they have to report their portfolio holding as at 31 December, they just sell riskier stocks before 31 December in order to make their portfolio look less risky on Annual Report. Later on, they just purchase the risky securities again in a view to earn high profits. †¢Information Release Hypothesis According to this hypothesis, also known as differential information effect, the excess January returns are the effect of significant information releases that occur in the first few days of January. This hypothesis relies on how discrepancy in the quantity of information available for different companies may result in different returns. According to Rozeff and Kinney (1976), distribution of year-end information may have a greater effect on the prices of small firms’ securities relative to large firms because the market for small firm stock is less efficient . 2.3Empirical evidences on Calendar effects In order to investigate on the existence of calendar anomalies, there have been several studies conducted obtaining different results. In a recent paper by Haug and Hirshcey (2005) on January effect, evidence is found that the anomaly is significant for small cap stocks and continues to be consistent over time . Moreover, Fountas and Segredakis (2002) investigate about the significance of the monthly seasonality in the Amman Stock Exchange and find very significant January effects in this market.

Is Love A Key Element When Choosing A Marriage Partner? Essay -- essay

A famous quote by John Lennon saying that â€Å"love is the answer and only you know that for sure† was not entirely truthful the fact not realised was that, for the many people in today’s contemporary â€Å"dating† grouping, truly knowing what the answer actually is in regards to dating is often easier said than done. Therefore, the answer certainly is not love. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (1974), love is defined as a â€Å"strong affection, a warm attachment, attraction based on sexual desire, cherish, to feel passion, devotion or tenderness for ~, caress and to take pleasure in ~ â€Å" (p.417). In the modern-day world where the preferences and choices of human mate selection has become a topic of broad exploration, it is highly questionable as to whether or not â€Å"love† is the principal influence that leads an individual’s decision of choosing a life-long partner. The choosing of a marriage partner today seems to be a crucial aspect of life decisions that makes all other choices in one’s life seem to be more or less trivial when comparing accordingly. When you come to a decision as to who you want to marry, share the rest of your life with and become one with, you are changing every aspect of your once single and independent life. For the reason that life changes so significantly when a marriage partner has been chosen, there are countless factors that have an effect on the choices that individuals make. Firstly, Botwin et al. (1997) insist that â€Å"personality plays a critical role in mate selection and marital happiness† (p.128) but many other attributes such as the many dating processes, the many problems that often occur in relationships, and individual preferences all highly motivate, aspire and aim to encourage people in today’s society toward finding their preferred marriage partner. Society often questions the difficulty involved for an average person to simply decide â€Å"who† they desire to marry. What's more is the reality that many people also criticize the individuals who have no idea who they want to marry. Research by Doosje et al. (1999) shows that â€Å"both men and women value most in their partner that she/he is kind and considerate, socially exciting, creative and intellectually stimulating† (p.46) which goes to prove that couples want their marriages to work and do not even consider them to eventually fail. Buying a car or buying a house is a diff... ...enges that young adults face in today’s society but even more importantly, it is the largest challenge that the future of the family life will be facing for years to come. Transformation of dracula

Transformation of Drachma Drachma Is a timeless novel written by Abram Stoker and to this day remains a thrilling read about good vs. evil In the form of Van Helping and his companions pitted against the supernatural forces of Count Drachma, the vampire from Transylvania. Not only was this novel about good vs.. Evil but upon inspection found to have many themes and views relevant to the time it was written. This caused it to be a huge success of its time and in 1922 the German director Murmur seeing the success of the story put it under transformation and named it Nonstarter. This silent film was very similar to Drachma except It was more relevant to the times It was written In. Public opinion about certain aspects of society had changed and even though both forms of media were set in the same timeshare some themes had been eliminated or turned on their heads. Now both these media were made in different styles with Drachma made in the gothic style. This is apparent with the Supernatur al aspect of Drachma and his Vampire kin. Stoker's descriptions of Drachma are always set as comparisons to animals so even when In human form Drachma Is not quite human but rather meeting far more unnatural. In Nonstarter the style Is the one of the time being German expressionism with themes prevalent throughout the film, the most obvious being the use of shadows to signify darkness and evil as well as the unknown. This is best captured with the powerful Image of count Errol walking up the stairs to attack Nina with his eerie shadow adding to the sense of darkness and mystery. Drachma had many themes but like Nonstarter was an expression of the times In which they were conceived In, so many themes in Drachma did not make the transition. GenderHierarchy was viewed as an Important cog of Victorian culture and that held true throughout the book with the submissive, helpless females needing the help of the apparent stronger sex, males. The only exception to this is Mina but even then s he is only able to by having â€Å"a man's brain†. Christian salvation and imagery was not part of the transformation process into nonstarter as being an important theme in Drachma is non-existent In Nonstarter. A great scene to help show this Is the killing of Lucy where after being killed for a second time Lucy Is restored to â€Å"unequalled sweetness ND purity'. SE of holy symbols only reinforces this theme with the crucifix and holy wafers making appearances. The theme of superstition vs.. Science is also at the forefront with the logical, rational dry Seward unable to explain the biting with all of his reasoning and it is only through superstition from a man of higher faith who is unable to uncover the mystery. Also when it comes to the hunting and killing of Drachma science is not enough to defeat the beast and faith Is needed to kill the monster. The big thing of the unknown ,strange east Invading progressive closedEngland was also not only an issue in the book but a n issue at the time with high immigration rates making some conservative Englishmen very nervous. Nonstarter due to the time it was made after the 1st world war therefore had more themes applying to post war Germany and some themes from Drachma where completely rubbed out with the gender hierarchy almost reversed as the men look like bumbling and his blatant disregard of clues from a book of vampires accompanied by Errol being deterred by the rosary the only mention of these two themes. Religion vs.. Science wasn't as big of as issue as at the time of nonstarter. This was different for Drachma as Charles Darning's origin of species had Just been published; challenging the faith of many Christians perhaps leading conservative Abram Stoker to show that religion is still important. In the sass's this wasn't as big of an issue and therefore was not a theme in the film. WWW was the bloodiest war in human history at that point and the Spanish influenza had Just ripped its way through Europ e. This is reflected in the way Count Errol brings death to Thomas Hatter's city with the scene f the coffins being taken down the street. You will notice that Count Oarlocks teeth are different to Drachma's. Errol has the teeth of a rat rather than the stereotypical enlarged canines. Also his arrival is matched by some rats who are also bringers of plague. So count Errol could be a symbol for the rat as he brings what is reported in the film as plague. All in all I believe Transformation to be a useful tool as it can expose people who enjoyed the original to something different and in Drachmas case show a great contrast between different times and different people.
